Next Game — Fri, Oct 23 9:00 PM ET
Tampa Bay Lightning – Colorado Avalanche

About the Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning were founded in 1991 and began NHL play during the 1992-93 season alongside the Ottawa Senators.

The arrival of the Lightning helped establish the NHL in Florida and was part of a wider period of league expansion during the 1990s.

Success did not come immediately. Tampa Bay reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 1996, but the franchise eventually developed into one of the NHL's most successful teams of the 21st century.

Division History

When the Lightning entered the NHL in 1992, Tampa Bay competed in the Norris Division of the Campbell Conference.

The NHL reorganized its conferences and divisions the following season. The Campbell Conference became the Western Conference and the Wales Conference became the Eastern Conference, while Tampa Bay moved into the Atlantic Division.

Another league realignment in 1998 created the Southeast Division, where the Lightning remained for 15 seasons.

The NHL reorganized again in 2013, returning Tampa Bay to the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.

The exception was the shortened 2020-21 season, when the NHL temporarily reorganized its divisions and the Lightning competed in the Central Division.

Championship History

The Lightning reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time during the 1995-96 season but did not win a playoff series until 2003.

One year later, Tampa Bay captured the first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history.

The Lightning defeated the New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers before facing the Calgary Flames in the 2004 Stanley Cup Final. Tampa Bay won the series in seven games, with Ruslan Fedotenko scoring both Lightning goals in the deciding game.

Brad Richards received the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

The Lightning returned to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015 but lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Another major period of success began late in the decade.

Tampa Bay produced one of the greatest regular seasons in NHL history in 2018-19, finishing 62-16-4 with 128 points. The Lightning won the Presidents' Trophy and tied the NHL record at the time with 62 victories, although the Columbus Blue Jackets eliminated Tampa Bay in the opening round of the playoffs.

The Lightning responded by winning the Stanley Cup the following season.

Because the 2019-20 season was interrupted, the playoffs were completed in neutral-site bubbles in Canada. Tampa Bay defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets, Boston Bruins and New York Islanders before beating the Dallas Stars in six games in the Stanley Cup Final.

Victor Hedman won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs.

Tampa Bay successfully defended the Stanley Cup in 2021. The Lightning defeated the Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders before beating the Montreal Canadiens in five games in the Final.

Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy received the Conn Smythe Trophy after finishing each of Tampa Bay's four playoff series with a shutout victory.

The Lightning reached the Stanley Cup Final for a third consecutive season in 2022 but were defeated by the Colorado Avalanche in six games.

Tampa Bay has won three Stanley Cups, with championships in 2004, 2020 and 2021.

The franchise also owns four division championships and the 2018-19 Presidents' Trophy.

More recently, Tampa Bay continued to qualify regularly for the postseason but was eliminated in the opening round in four consecutive seasons from 2023 through 2026. The Lightning's 2026 season ended with a seven-game first-round loss to the Montreal Canadiens.

The Lightning's Home

The Lightning play their home games at Benchmark International Arena in downtown Tampa.

During their inaugural 1992-93 season, the Lightning played at Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds.

Tampa Bay then moved to the much larger Florida Suncoast Dome in St. Petersburg for three seasons. The venue was later renamed the Thunderdome and is now known as Tropicana Field.

The Lightning moved into a new permanent arena in downtown Tampa in 1996. Originally known as the Ice Palace, the building later carried the St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa Bay Times Forum and Amalie Arena names.

In August 2025, the arena was renamed Benchmark International Arena.

The venue has hosted all three of Tampa Bay's Stanley Cup championship teams and has been central to the growth of hockey in the Tampa Bay area.

Notable Lightning Players

Steven Stamkos became one of the defining players in Lightning history after Tampa Bay selected him with the first overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft.

Stamkos spent his first 16 NHL seasons with the Lightning and served as team captain from 2014 through 2024.

He finished his Tampa Bay career with 555 goals and 1,137 points. Both were franchise records when he left the organization in 2024.

Stamkos won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL's leading goal scorer twice, including a 60-goal season in 2011-12.

He captained Tampa Bay to consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021 and to another Stanley Cup Final in 2022 before signing with the Nashville Predators in 2024.

Martin St. Louis became one of the franchise's first true superstars after joining Tampa Bay in 2000.

St. Louis recorded 365 goals, 588 assists and 953 points during his time with the Lightning.

His greatest season came in 2003-04, when he won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL's leading scorer and the Hart Trophy as league MVP before helping Tampa Bay capture its first Stanley Cup.

St. Louis won another Art Ross Trophy in 2012-13, becoming the oldest player in NHL history to lead the league in scoring at the time.

His No. 26 became the first jersey number retired by the Lightning in 2017.

Vincent Lecavalier was another central figure in Tampa Bay's first championship era.

The Lightning selected Lecavalier with the first overall pick in the 1998 NHL Draft, and he spent 14 seasons with the franchise.

Lecavalier recorded 383 goals and 874 points for Tampa Bay and helped the Lightning win the 2004 Stanley Cup.

He scored a franchise-record 52 goals during the 2006-07 season and won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL's leading goal scorer.

The Lightning retired his No. 4 in 2018.

Nikita Kucherov developed into one of the most productive offensive players in franchise history after Tampa Bay selected him in the second round of the 2011 NHL Draft.

Kucherov won the Art Ross Trophy, Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award during the 2018-19 season.

He later played a major role in Tampa Bay's consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.

During the 2023-24 season, Kucherov set a Lightning single-season record with 144 points and became the first winger in NHL history to record 100 assists in one season.

He later surpassed Martin St. Louis and Victor Hedman to become the franchise's career assists leader.

Victor Hedman became the cornerstone of Tampa Bay's defense after the Lightning selected him with the second overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft.

Hedman won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman in 2018 and the Conn Smythe Trophy during Tampa Bay's 2020 Stanley Cup championship run.

He was also part of the 2021 championship team and became Lightning captain following Stamkos' departure in 2024.

In December 2024, Hedman surpassed Stamkos to become the franchise's all-time leader in regular-season games played.

Andrei Vasilevskiy became the most accomplished goaltender in Lightning history during the franchise's championship era.

Vasilevskiy won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender in 2019 and backstopped Tampa Bay to Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021.

He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP following the 2021 championship and has established franchise goaltending records in categories including wins and shutouts.

Other prominent players in Lightning history include Dave Andreychuk, Brad Richards, Brian Bradley, Ben Bishop, Ryan Callahan, Ondrej Palat, Alex Killorn and Brayden Point.
