Utah Mammoth
About the Utah Mammoth
The Utah Mammoth are one of the NHL's newest franchises, beginning play during the 2024-25 season.
The NHL established a new franchise in Utah in 2024 after Smith Entertainment Group acquired the hockey assets of the Arizona Coyotes organization. Players, draft picks and hockey operations personnel moved from Arizona to Utah, but the NHL treats Utah as a separate franchise with its own history and records.
The team played its inaugural season under the temporary Utah Hockey Club name while the organization developed a permanent identity.
Following a fan-voting process, the franchise officially became the Utah Mammoth in May 2025. The new identity draws inspiration from the prehistoric mammoths that once lived in Utah, while the team's logo incorporates references to the state's mountains and landscape.
Division History
Utah entered the NHL as a member of the Central Division in the Western Conference.
The Mammoth compete alongside the Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets.
Utah has remained in the Central Division throughout its short NHL history.
Championship History
Utah played its first NHL game on October 8, 2024, defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 at Delta Center.
Dylan Guenther scored the first goal in franchise history, while Clayton Keller also scored after being named the team's first captain shortly before the beginning of the season.
Utah Hockey Club finished its inaugural season with a 38-31-13 record. The team remained in the Western Conference playoff race late into the season but ultimately missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The newly renamed Utah Mammoth took another step forward in 2025-26.
Utah finished the regular season 43-33-6 and earned the first Stanley Cup Playoff berth in franchise history as a Western Conference wild-card team.
The Mammoth faced the Vegas Golden Knights in the opening round. Utah won Game 2 in Las Vegas before returning to Salt Lake City for the first home playoff game in franchise history.
The Mammoth defeated Vegas 4-2 in that game to take a 2-1 series lead, giving Utah its first home playoff victory. The Golden Knights eventually recovered to win the series in six games.
Utah is still searching for its first division championship, conference championship and Stanley Cup.
Home of the Mammoth
The Utah Mammoth play their home games at Delta Center in downtown Salt Lake City.
The arena originally opened in 1991 and had long been best known as the home of the NBA's Utah Jazz before NHL hockey arrived in 2024.
Because Delta Center was designed primarily for basketball, significant renovations were required to improve the building for NHL games.
Smith Entertainment Group began a multi-year transformation of the arena following Utah's inaugural season. The first phase improved hockey sightlines and added seating behind the goals, with additional renovations planned to turn Delta Center into a permanent dual-sport venue designed for both NHL and NBA games.
The arena hosted the first regular-season game in Utah franchise history in October 2024 and the state's first NHL Stanley Cup Playoff game in April 2026.
Notable Mammoth Players
Clayton Keller became the first captain in franchise history before Utah's inaugural season.
Keller immediately established himself as the team's offensive leader. During the 2024-25 season, he led Utah with 30 goals, 60 assists and 90 points.
He remained a central part of the Mammoth as the franchise reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 2025-26.
Dylan Guenther secured his place in franchise history by scoring the first goal in Utah's inaugural NHL game.
Guenther scored twice in the 5-2 opening-night victory over Chicago and quickly developed into one of the team's leading offensive players. He has also become particularly effective in overtime, producing several game-winning goals during Utah's first two seasons.
Logan Cooley became another cornerstone of Utah's young core.
Selected third overall in the 2022 NHL Draft before the hockey operations group moved from Arizona to Utah, Cooley arrived in Salt Lake City as one of the organization's most promising young players.
His speed and offensive ability made him an important part of Utah's first two teams, and he scored during the franchise's first Stanley Cup Playoff series in 2026.
Mikhail Sergachev became one of the first major additions made specifically for the move to Utah.
The organization acquired the defenseman from the Tampa Bay Lightning in June 2024, shortly before its inaugural season.
Sergachev arrived with extensive playoff experience and two Stanley Cup championships from his time in Tampa Bay. He immediately became one of Utah's most heavily used defensemen and helped provide experience to a young roster.
Karel Vejmelka became the leading goaltender during Utah's first seasons.
Vejmelka was named the team's MVP following the inaugural 2024-25 campaign and remained an important part of the Mammoth as the franchise reached the playoffs the following season.
He started Utah's first Stanley Cup Playoff games in 2026, including the franchise's first playoff victory and first home playoff win.
Other notable players from the franchise's early years include Nick Schmaltz, Barrett Hayton, Lawson Crouse, Sean Durzi and JJ Peterka.
